Driveabout India I 1987

It seems to be a decadal cycle with Ashim Ghosh. His first major road trip across India was in 1987, over 10,000kms across India. Delhi - Indora - Pune - Goa - Thiruvananthapuram - Kanyakumari - Chennai - Tirupathi - Vizag - Bhuvaneshwar - Kolkata - Varanasi - Delhi.

This was in a converted Mahendra 540 4-Wheel drive jeep.

 

Driveabout India II 1997

The second one was in July-August 1997, 9948kms, with 50 days on the road, in an 800cc Maruti-Suzuki car.

Delhi - Udaipur - Vadodara - Mumbai - Pune - Goa - Pondicherry - Chennai - Hyderabad - Vizag - Bhuvaneshwar -  Kolkata - Varanasi - Delhi. This was a research trip,  under the aegis of "Project Unearth", where Ghosh set off to source and collect diverse photographs from across India for his project "Post Midnight Hour: celebrating the Indian photograph - 1947-1997.

Driveabout India III 06-07

The third one was in Dec 2007 to Jan 2008, 7577.9kms, in a 1300cc Maruti- Swift.

Delhi - Orcha - Khajuraho - Varanasi - BodhGaya - Kolkata - Sambalpur - Nagpur - Hyderabad - Bijapur - Goa -  Mahabaleshwar - Mumbai - Vadodara.

One of the main purposes of this trip was to recce a road route, for Ghosh's first feature film : Prothom Maa: Kali's journey back to Africa   (click for more details)
